Many years ago I joined a local art society in order to broaden my skills and provide new interest to my pastime.

One such activity was their regular painting competitions, and this was my entry for one of their competitions “Riding High”.

Obviously as the newcomer, I had no chance of winning a prize, or even getting a mention. My slightly lateral approach to the brief didn’t go down well (i.e. riding high on the footplate of a steam train) and the competition was won by the society’s top artist for a nice rendition of a Lancaster Bomber.

It wouldn’t be the last time I would lose out to a vintage warplane…
